Tenex Procedure for Equine Tendon and Ligament Injuries

Tendon and ligament injuries can be challenging to manage in horses. Healing often takes months, and some injuries continue to cause discomfort, inflammation, or lameness even after rest, rehabilitation, and other treatments. When damaged tissue does not repair in a strong, organized way, it can interfere with recovery and increase the risk of ongoing issues. For select cases, Countryside Equine Hospital offers the Tenex procedure as a minimally invasive option for chronic or recurring tendon and ligament injuries.

Tenex was first developed for use in human medicine and is now being used in equine care for horses with soft tissue injuries that have not healed as expected. The procedure uses ultrasound guidance so our veterinary team can see the injured area in real time. Through a very small incision, a specialized instrument uses ultrasonic energy to break down and remove damaged tissue while helping protect the surrounding healthy tendon or ligament fibers.

Tenex may be considered for certain injuries involving the:

  • Suspensory ligament
  • Superficial digital flexor tendon
  • Deep digital flexor tendon
  • Areas where tendons or ligaments attach to bone

Because the procedure is minimally invasive, some horses may be treated while standing under sedation. In other cases, general anesthesia may be recommended based on the injury location, the horse’s needs, and the treatment plan. When performed as a standing procedure, many horses are able to return home the same day.

Tenex may also be combined with regenerative medicine, such as platelet-rich plasma, also known as PRP. After damaged tissue is removed, PRP may be injected into the area to support a healthier healing response. Not every tendon or ligament injury is a good fit for Tenex. Our veterinarians will evaluate your horse’s lameness exam, ultrasound findings, medical history, previous treatments, and performance goals before recommending the next step.
